I was thinking about finally fixing my loose steering with a rebuilt steering box on ebay.(for a 76) I was going to purchase it and have a mechanic install it. Does anyone have an estimated time of how long it should take to install? I was recommened to a mechanic, want to make sure I don't get overcharged for the labor & keep it within my budget.
thanks
A good mechanic shouldn't take more than an hour. If he wants to charge you for 2 I'd get suspicious...
BTW, unless you want to swap steering boxes again I recommend you get a quality rebuild... Contact Mike (tracdogg2) or Gary (GTR1999). I also think some of the bigger vendors have good boxes... check with ZIP, Van Steel.... maybe VBP.
DIY and keep the money in your pocket. You'll need regular hand tools, jackstands, a puller for the pitman arm, and a cooler full of your favorite Corvette beverage.

The Pittman arm has a really big nut. Buy the socket before you start. Unless you have a good parts store nearby, they may not stock a socket that big. Also, this nut torques on at 120 to 160 foot pounds (factory spec). It'd be a good idea to get a torque wrench that goes up to this amount of torque.
I removed a steering box from a 69 BB with PS. I can't remember that it was any problem. I've removed recently a steering box from a SB and it wasn't any problem either.

Sounds like the mechanical end is not "fun" for you. Find another mechanic (the quote you got from the other guy already showed his "colors") who comes recommended from other Vette folks in your area. (Ask on this forum)

Add to that a good dial type inch-pound torque wrench, a zero to 30 inch pound torque wrench is ideal, (0 to 75 or 100 inch pounds maximum will probably be accurate enough too) for setting up the box after rebuilding it. Oh, and a 200 ft. pound or larger torque wrench for re-attaching the pittman arm.
If you don't already have them, you get to justify buying some new tools.
Thanks guys, guess the 4hrs he quoted is a little excessive. I might find another mechanic or if I have time, tackle it myself.
Actual book time is .9 hrs. With a few special tools you can do it in less than two hours. Four nuts, one bolt, and a pitman arm puller. Everything is master splined so you can't put it back in wrong.
The hardest part is installing the new races/bushings and setting the preloads. If you don't get the new gears you will have 54 steels to install also.
