Hi Perf distributor shaft?
Initial timing is set by the position of the distributor relative to the cam, and total controlled by the springs and weights on the fly weight assembly.
There is a Sticky on timing at the top of this forum, good info by smarter guys than me.

there is a stop bushing installed in the distributor. You can get bushings of various diameters - a smaller bushing will allow a greater amount of mechanical travel and a larger bushing will reduce the amount of mechanical travel.
You can try using a larger bushing to reduce the amount of travel and therefore amount of mechanical advance and than increase your initial timing

To get more initial timing while maintaining your 36 total (shortening the curve) you need to first verify that you have the advance stop bushing in place to limit the centrifugal curve. If the bushing is gone (most are), you can get a new one in Mr. Gasket kit 928G. Give the bushing a whack with a hammer to "smoosh" it a little before you install it in order to get a really tight fit.

If the curve is still too long, I weld a little bit of the advance slot closed and then file it to the length I want with a rotary file. For performance applications, I like to run 16 to 18 degrees initial and 36 total. In other words, I run my centrifugal curves at 18 to 20 degrees. If the car has a lot of cam, I run the centrifugal curve even shorter.

If you need help with it, and if you know how much initial and total you want to run, I can set the curve up for you - let me know.

got the MR Gasket kit and the bushing in ..... the curve i had was 10 and 26 at 2300 so i cut the spring or shorten to get 2800 ..... corvettte central offers a hi perf shaft so would this help? or am i going in the wrong direction?.... i can weld the slot ... have a MIG and TIG at home..... and i did try 16 and 18 that worked very good but at at cruz, 65mph+ i got the chug and ping... that was with MSD pro billit , that i have put back in the box.... now i'm using a 69 vett distributor that was modified for auto cross.... it was a gift.....

i guess i can make my own bushings....

THANK YOU ALL!!!

Lars - I didn't think you were still doing that. Are you still available? I would love to have you set up my distributor for me!

2800 is a good peg-out rpm, but that 26-degree curve is too long - you need more initial than 10.

Then use that TIG and just weld in a little tad of 308L filler into the end of the advance slot. Once you've filled in about 1/16" of the slot, file it smooth. This will allow you to shorten the curve to about 18-20 degrees so you can run 16-18 initial.

Sure - no problem. I've fixed ones that have been screwed up far worse than you can ever mess it up.
