Looking for some help on this one, here's the deal. My '81 had sat for several weeks and required a jump to get it started. Jumped it, no problem starting, and drove it for 15 mins. The car wouldn't start after that.
I turn the key to the accessory position and the gauges light up, but when I turn the key all the way to start the car the power goes out completely, like the battery has been disconnected. After a couple of minutes the power will return.
I replaced the old battery thinking that was the problem with no luck.
Do I have a short in the ignition/column? Any suggestions on how I should proceed?
I finally had a chance to work on the car this weekend. The battery terminals were fine. I checked connections to the starter – all clean and tight.
While I was under the car, I noticed that the main ground cable was split and corroded. As soon I replaced that cable and the battery had a good solid ground, she fired right up.
Needless to say I took her for a nice long cruise down A1A – smiling all the way.
