Default starter problems, please help experts

Hi i'm new here and i have a 78 with a 454. I have had starter problems for a while now, first it just took long, and eventually it wouldn't turn over and made an extremly loud, grinding sound. i took out the starter to find the end of the gear (about 3/4 of it) on the starter looks stripped. Maybe the gear wasn't shooting down far enough or maybe its supposed to look like that, either way i don't know what caused it and why its not working. Also, at the bottom of the pan under the flywheel there is a hole with no bolt in it, is it supposed to have a bolt or leaK? any help would be appreiciated!!

Sounds like your starter is gone. doesn't kick out far enough anymore.

The hole in the flywheel shield is suppose to be there. Its for drainage.
