I have a 78, Clock did not work. Put some oil in the back now it runs, but it gains time. In less then 24 hours it gained 5 minutes. New clock costs $140. Any ideas? I don't know if this is the original clock.
Sounds like an original. Depending on temperature and humidity, my clock gains, loses or stops for a while (to rest a bit I guess). Some days it is in the 5 min range, usually about a gain of 2 mins/day.
I'm with LYLE to agree that the fact the inner mechanical workings still operate is way cool. This was state-of-the-art stuff back then, same level of technology used to send men to the moon or fly an SR-71 at mach 3!!
Just make sure the adjust **** screw is tight since turning the clock back is in the unscrew/loosten ccw direction.
Reset the clock by pulling out the **** and turning the hands clockwise if slow, counterclockwise if fast. This will, if the clock error is five minutes of more, automatically compensate for time gain or lag. Several resettings, several days apart, may be needed to properly adjust the clock mechanism. Have your clock cleaned and oiled by a competent clock serviceman at least every two years."
So if the adjustment you make is for more than 5 minutes back the clock will slow down some, 5 minutes forward it will speed up.
If you take the clock apart to file the contacts and/or clean and oil it you will see a small lever that will speed up or slow down the movement. There are some decent threads on it if you search the archives. I got mine from being right twice a day to losing 1-2 minutes per week.
