I have a '69 coupe that has been redone. It is a small block and I am wondering if the block/heads are 300 or 350 horse components. How would I confirm if it is the original engine and the correct HP rating? Casting codes, location of codes, etc?
Thanks to all you Corvette guys and gals out there.
the original block as the vin stamped on the block.
There is an area on the front of the block to the upper left of the timing chain cover. this is where the vin of the car should be stamped if it is the original.
as for the other casting codes and location, Ill let the more experienced members chime in.
1. 350hp only came with a manual transmission
2. Heads were 3921786 or 3927187
3. Carb should be a rochester 7029207
4. Broadcast code is HY or HW on the VIN pad
5. Valve covers on a 350hp were cast aluminum with ribbed top
Post your VIN and people can tell you exactly what that block was designed for. Your VIN will look similar to this on the passenger side above the water pump, in front of the valve cover:
That is the VIN you probably pulled of the registration. Pull the numbers off the engine pad, these are a partial VIN with builld date and suffix code. Should look like this : 19S716618 V0211HZ
Okay, this what I saw on the engine itself.
Casting #3932386
Numbers on Pad, 19S711869 V1216HZ
Looks like the original engine, right?
yes'sir!!
Your serial number plus December 16, 1968 engine build date in Flint for a 350/300hp with automatic transmission ... car build date of January 4th, 1969.
