What exactally would I need to stop a leak on the front of my trans by the torque converter. (It is not the front seal) I just replaced it. I'm sick of taking it in and out so I'm going to take it out and replace all of it.
They seem to all leak if left sitting for some time. I have read that their is lots of fluid above the dipstick hole and if the fluid from above leaks down in an old transmission it over flows around parts like the dipstick tube press fit that is not a perfect seal. If you just take the pan off you only get half the fluid out so it must be in the torque converter up above in the trans.
The trans dipstick has a rubber "O" ring to seal between the parts.
I had to replace mine for the same reason.
Easy to do when the trans is cold.
Pull the tube out, the "O" ring can be removed with your small finger and pop the new one in, then replace the tube.
5 min job.
i was told by a trans. mech. that the seal alone would not stop a leak i had a turbo 350 i had once in a camaro. he said if the bushing in the pump was worn and the input shaft on the torque convert. was worn it would probably still leak. i found that my torq. convert. had a groove worn in the shaft where the seal runs. new convert. and pump bushing and seal solved the probl. just an idea.
Its the front pump gasket.
You take out several bolts then put two back and pull the pump out , replace the gasket and install. I have done this several times
Ok, so when I pull it I'm going to want to get a new front seal, a front pump gasket, and should I put in a new pilot bushing since I'm in there? BTW, it is a brand new converter.
From: GA "When I grow up, I'm gonna get a Trans Am and run from the cops". Direct quote from my 4yo son.
Unless your calling something else a pilot bushing, you don't need one for an automatic. Just for manuals. (Bushing in the rear of the crank). It stabilizes the input shaft on the manuals.
I don't think there is any.
If your not real familer with a transmission, maybe you should get help on the pump gasket, it looks like a jig saw puzzle when you take the gasket off and only fits one way, it kind of tricky!
