You have to remove the U-bolts on the differential end, then you can slide the driveshaft yoke out of the trans. Tape up (or somehow secure) your U-joint end caps so they don't come off and spill needle bearings all over the place.
A while back a member stated you could do this, which would save a lot of work. You wouldn't have to pull the front differental mount.
There's no need to pull the diff mount. All you need to do is use an extension of appropriate size to get to the bolts from the front of the crossmember.
I have a 75 and there is no way you can remove the driveshaft by unbolting it at the rear end then sliding it back out of the transmission. I have to remove the front universal by removing the u bolts then with a long extension remove the rear end u bolts then slid the driveshaft out the front. Then the slip yoke can be removed. If I am wrong then in the last 2 transmissions swaps I have gone to alot of extra expense obtaining special slip yokes with removable u bolts.
Norval, I sit corrected. It's been less than a year since I last pulled my driveshaft, but that's exactly what I did (+ push the yoke forward as far as it would go so that the driveshaft would clear it).
