I'm still wondering why no one is considering the 6L80E...

Noone has a way to control the computer on it yet. Actually, I think that's still a problem for the Allison.

Control the Allison???

Been doing it for years, there are several boxes out there you can add to completly control the Allison.

I thought GM released something to do that with it already. I'd have to read the tech docs on gm's site on the 6L80E but I coulda swore I read something about them having a way to make it work with its own seperate computer.

Do you know who sells them?

I was told noone had one but I'm still not over the possibility of putting it in if it would fit even if some cutting has to be done to make it fit. I think the extra 2 gears would more than make up for the extra 100 lbs when compared to a 4L80E.

Specifically and to wit, give me a SOLID engineering answer as to why a 6 pseed AUTO is SO much better than a 4 speed AUTO, both having a similar 1st gear, and a similar O/drive ratio.... .68 rounds up to .70 and first gear is whatever....show me the advantage....

surely in a stick shift it makes some sense...not much but SOME....

but in a automatic,?? WTF is that torque converter for?? to add slippage and multiply torque into whatever gear it's locked into after the TC....long as you don't lock the TC prematurely, you got all the advantages of a dynaflow, and no disadvantages....

so just where do 2 extra gears bring anything to the table other than extra weight and complexity....keeping in mind simple is allways better....

please??

Even with the quote, this is an open question, not specifically aimed at the above fellow....

ANYONE???

Bragging rights? If you have a narrow powerband, it could probably be useful, too. Set it up with paddle shifters or something and it could really be cool, also.

ATS sells the Co-Pilot

EFILive can set up your Allison also along with your Dmax.

After seeing a back to back picture of the Allison and a 4L80E, I don't think it will fit. The reason I thought it would be nice is because the overdrive for a 4L80E is 0.75 and for the 6 speed Allison it's 0.61 which would mean it would cruise between 15 & 20 mph faster at the same rpm with the Allison. I wasn't really too worried about low gear because I might have too much power on the street for anything below 60 mph.

The blue one is a cable operated 7004R, predecessor to the 4L60E, not a 4L80E FWIW.

Still gives you a good idea on how much larger that SOB is. That thing is GINORMOUS. You'd never fit that huge thing in a C3 tunnel, without some serious modifications. Anyone got a picture of a 6L80E next to like a TH-350?

I've looked everywhere to find a back to back photo of an Allison and a 4L80E but I just can''t find one. Is the 4L80 physically larger than a 700R4?

Yes, and by a significant amount....in size and ~50 lbs weight...maybe a hundred....

problem is, my '72 here had a 700 in it, the install took a widening of the pass side tunnel by about 2" to clear the tranny housing...course it WAS a Muncie 4 speed.....

now with the 200, there should have been no problem...

and someone wants to shoehorn in a 4L80 or somethin even LARGER??

to just specifically WHAT avail??

these cars are only 3300 lbs and maybe find a stock shark up to 3600 lbs....but really now...with any engine making 400+ ft lbs torque, and ANY automatic, even a 2 speed power slide....you can spin the tires into total oblivion so just how many reasonable speeds we actually use on the street?? IMO...4 speed autos are fine, for ANY car....
just make them LAST FOREVER....simple request, eh??
