It should hold 600 hp as-it-is. Your problem will be to see if it is too big to fit in the standard tunnel area. That would be a "killer" combination. Make sure you get one that came out of a gas engine set-up. The controls unit can handle 2 different shift programs...so you could have one set up for normal driving and another set up for "kick-it-in-the-a$$". Six speed/ overdrive tranny with lockup-clutch! Love to see pics, if you do it. [P.S. I worked for Allison for 40 years; this is one honey of a transmission.]
They are heavier than THM.s, but not 500 lbs. The performance improvements should outweigh the weight gain (ask anyone with a Sierra/Allison who pulls a fifth wheel).
4L80 weighs 255 wet and Allison weighs 330 dry. I would love to have the extra two gears. Everyone and their brother makes super strong 4L80's but I haven't found a shop that sells a 6-speed Allison that is built up. I wouldn't want to put in a stock one. Also, we were going to use "BIG STUFF" computer with the 4L80. Would that still work with the Allison. Also, would it eat up more power than the 4L80?
Not to mention, I get the feeling there is a reason I haven't been able to find anyone else that has done an Allison in a fast car. They've had the 5 speed version for a least a while now.
Buy one out of a wrecked Sierra pickup..with the tranny computer. The hard part will be finding someone who can properly integrate the tranny and engine operating systems. Sure would be a hoot! P.S. My point in above entry is that you don't need to "beef up" the Allison for your car. It's plenty stout as is it. It is put behind a lot tougher duty cycle vehicles than yours.
I can understand the need of multi gears in a diesel hauling vechicle....the engine stays at 200-2500 rpm's all day long, and never varies...fine....that's the philosophy of a diesel....all torque down lo....
but in a gas engine vechicle, who needs a 5-6 speed tranny of ANY type.....with a TQ converter and 4 speed/overdrive, that's all anyone needs the rest is just added weight/complexity for no gain.....
unless i'ts a ricer with some wrung out 4 banger operating in the 6-7000 rpms range all the time, and the thing burns oil like a diesel after 20k miles running like that.....
The Allison in my LBZ Dura Max shifts like a Cadillac with long extended buttery smooth shifts. Why you would want one in a C3 Vette is a question I am asking myself. C3s need STICKS!

Simple programming will change it to a neck snapping shift.
The intent of this thread was to consider the installation of an Allison tranny in a Corvette. If you don't like automatics and don't want to discuss this issue....find another thread. Your comments are of no particular use here.
Just reading about the Allison, I though it would be great to have an A6 that could handle a lot of power made me think the Allison would be ok. I have never seen one in person and that's where the problem comes. After talking to a few people, it turns out it's way bigger than a 6L80 and just won't fit in a vette. GM would have to beef up the 6L80/6L90 in order to have one that they could use. Doesn't seem out of the question since there are many aftermarket 4L80's that handle much more power than a new Z06 puts out.
I recently did a 4l80 install in my 72 std car. My 4l80 weighed right at 200 lbs dry and no converter. The 11.5 inch converter weighed 45 lbs and a stock diesel converter weighed 75 lbs. I used a Powertrain Control Solutions trans controller to run it. People are working on a controller for the 6l80e but last I heard there isnt one available yet. Give them a call and ask about the allison (804) 752-6025. I had a nice chat with Mark Bowler from Bowler Transmissions and he was telling me about a 4l80e they built to go behind a 2500 horsepower turboed chevy motor, it has lots of custom parts inside and was 13,000 bucks. Get that allison in there and lets see how it works, should be a cool project!!
