so i picked up a used 700-r4 yesterday. The owner said he bought it with an engine and didn't want the tranny. Supposively it was rebuilt with 2k miles on it. For all i know it could have 200k on it. So on to by question... Is there anything i can look for to make sure that it doesn't need to be rebuilt. I have installed and removed transmissions, but have no experience with internals. This is a cheap project so a rebuild is the last thing i want to do. Eventually i want a manual but i don't have 5k right now. Any help would be much appreciated. And please keep the sarcasm to yourself. thank you
Did the transmission have fluid in it when you got it? If you have the fluid that came in it, drain it, and check for color and smell.
If it's brown at all or smells rancid then it's been very hot or run long and hard without a fluid change.
It's also a good idea to change out the small seal at the back on the tail shaft. Just pull out the original, and tap in a new one. You'll need to know what it came out of to get a correct one, and make sure you lube it and tap it in even.
Check the front where the pump housing is, and look for any signs of fluid seepage through the front main seal.
Apart from that it's a gamble. Make sure the detent and shifter cables are hooked up and adjusted properly, and if you don't already have one a finned frame mounted fluid cooler will help preserve the life of the trans while you own it.
i already drained the oil the and it looked a little too good. The pump is pretty clean and the rtv on the bolts look fresh. So im thinking either its good to go, or someone put it back together and it didn't work. I guess ill have to take a chance. Thanks for the reply
