Steering rack/pump compatibility
Just curious what the Steeroids conversion crowd is using for a pump. I'm getting a custom width rack built for my C4 suspension conversion, and am curious about re-using the stock pump. It's my understanding, and please correct me if I'm wrong, that pumps that connect to power boxes are quite a bit higher pressure than pumps that connect to racks. Seeing that our stock power system is an assist cylinder, rather than a power box, is the pump pressure a lower level that is compatible with most racks?
Thanks for the input and advice.
Mike
Pay attention to Jim Shea, he designed many of these systems, or knows who did.....his information is gospel, and you need do a search here/wherever you can find it....
BUT, I ran my stock '72 p/s system with a serp drive '87 vette pump and someone said use the '72 valving....that large brass nut the line screws into....so I swapped it over, and it worked fine from about '95 through '01, then I swapped to a '92 Grand Am rack, and lost track of the C4 valving....oh well, works fine....last year I added a hydroboost, and its fine....
I'm using a stock pump with a flow control valve shim kit. I am using all 5 shims. The kit shows a remote reservoir type pump but the kit is the same for early attached reservoir pumps.
