A buddy of mine is having a problem with his 78, it has the L-48, all original, no mods, about 77k miles. He drove it yesterday to go get some gas in it got back home, turned it off, then went to start it again and it started to crank and just kept cranking, it wouldn't stop!!! He turn the key to off, it was still cranking, he removed the key from the ignition, it kept cranking, he then grabbed some tools and got the battery unhooked. Has anyone ever had this happen, seen this happen or anything?
We're both trying to figure out what happened, he hasn't put the battery back in yet...
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
My first guess would be the starter solenoid shorted out.
I'd say pull the whole starter, and take it to an auto parts store (like Advance) where they'll test it for free. If it checks out OK, then I'd start looking for a short in the wiring to the starter and solenoid. :smash:
It's happened to me many times. Sounds like a bad solenoid on the starter. like Easy Mike suggested. I have also shimmed a new starter too close to the flywheel, and after engaged it was so tight it would not release. If you have not had the starter out recently for any reason, I would guess the solenod. While you are at it, it probably would not be a bad time to replace and /or clean battery connections, etc.
