I don't like the battery residing inside the cockpit. Has anyone tried moving it to the rear somewhere under or ahead of the gas tank? With the battery boxes available today, this seems like a easy task by bending and tiggin up a nice stainless bracket system to bolt the box to. I suppose it would help wieght distribution too.??

One of the better design features of the C3 Corvette is that (some of)the major weight masses are contained BETWEEN the wheels, reducing polar moment of inertia (look that up in your Funk & Wagnall's) and thereby improving the car's handling. That includes the battery. There are probably ways that you could get the battery moved out of the passenger compartment but the work involved would be excessive to say the least. If you're interested in safety, it wouldn't be that difficult to reinforce or even replace the existing battery box with something that's stronger and sealed better. As a point of comparison, Nextel (Winston?) Cup cars have the battery placed directly in front of the left rear wheel.
I'm not crazy about a battery sitting behind me either. But instead of moving the battery I purchased a sealed battery. I think that's a better solution for you.
If you're worried about venting, buy an Optima red-top and forget about it.
Go with a sealed battery like Optima. If you still arn't quite happy with it, build a better top to seperate it from the interior ... wouldn't be that difficult.
The only other places I think you could locate it is actually behind the front wheels, but your going to have to do some rearranging of other components such as the gas tank vapor canistor.

I can only agree about the location of the battery.................. as long as there are no problems, it's fine where it is. If you have to get a jump............... it's a PITA !
What I ended up doing is what macoshark told me he did on all his vettes. Install battery terminals above your rear license plate (Jegs sells them !) run a positive cable back from the battery and a negative to the frame................... problem solved ! Most batteries now have both side terminals and top terminals. You can jump the car from the outside or hook a battery charger up and never have to go inside the car ! Rick
