You didnt say if this was a big or small block, but is shuld be the same for either. After you remove the driveshaft and shifter, just loosen the motor mounts, and jack up the engine just enough to allow you to pull the tranny out of the bell housing. Hope you have a lift, if not you will be spending a while on your back. Good Luck
I recommend getting everything loose (free from the tranny)- getting the linkage out of the way, d-shaft off and then the tranny loose from the bell housing. The tranny will pull back and need to be rotated and then pulled back some more. The input shaft should just clear the bell housing and out it comes. I did not have to mess with the motor mounts or jack up the motor.
I did mine with the car on jack stands and I did pull the exhaust pipes off the manifolds and push the pipes to the side to get a touch more room. Laying on your back and doing this is a PITA but it can be done.
Block up the engine and as you pull the transmission to the rear turn it till the front drops out of the bell housing. It is tight but not to hard as when the front drops the crossmember holds it. Best if you have two people or you need to bench press the trans.
1972 4spd coupe.... do you have to pull the engine to get the trans out? Crossmember is welded not bolted.
thanks guys,
Sully
No, the transmission can be removed with both the engine and crossmember in the car. Do a search on this topic and you're sure to find plenty of information on the process.
