Default Short Water Pump Help

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if there are any issues with fitting a standard (5/8 shaft) instead of a corvette (3/4 shaft) short pump? I am not concerned about the pulley as I need to change it anyway. All I am concerned about is that it will work correctly and adequately.

Turns out my pump is dieing and I don't really want to rebuild it as it has some damage to the threads on the pully mount flange and the bearing is on its last legs.

My car is a 1979 btw

Thanks for any help

Many folks have done this in the past without realizing they were not using the Corvette water pump. Since you are changing the pulley, I would say that if you are prepared to deal with alignment issues that may arise, it should otherwise work fine.

I have never positioned them side by side to compare the pulley mounting points, but I know some folks do have alignment issues. One thing I have discovered is that the pulley mounting flange is press fitted to the water pump shaft. If you are careful and use a press, the flange can be moved on the shaft to correct a minor misalignment. I have done this in the past.

Having said all of that, I prefer using the Corvette pump with the 3/4" shaft to avoid alignment issues down the road. Many of the aftermarket suppliers even carry the pump with the 3/4" shaft just for the Corvette.

Good luck... GUSTO

Thanks Gusto,

I forgot to mention that I will be running electric fans, so the stock clutch and fan fitment will not be an issue.

Reason for asking is that I will be at a car show this weekend that *hopefully* has some parts for sale. If I could find a corvette pump this would be my preference. If not I just want to know if the standard short pump will work.

Thanks again

I believe there are two differences between the Corvette short and the standard short pump. The Corvette pump is a 3/4" shaft and the standard is 5/8". Measuring from the mounting point of the pump to the fan mounting flange, the Corvette pump (1971-1982) measures 5.8" while the standard measures 5.625".

Why not just buy the correct one for the car?

I did the same thing on my 68. March makes a kit. I had to get a new power stering pump and brackets and had to move the alternator to the pasenger side of the car. I did change from a 327 to a sb 400 which made some of these changes necessary.

Being in the UK doesn't help much unfortunately. Some stuff available is junk or way over priced.

Anyone had any experience with the Tuff Stuff 1394 series pumps? I would prefer chrome if possible and can't really find any other than that one.

Thanks for your help guys

The bolt pattern where the fan goes is also different

I can't recommend anything that you will find off the shelf in the UK, but you can order from Summit racing or Mid America Vette, just to name a few. A chrome vette pump from Mid America is $130. Twice that for a polished aluminum Edlebrock from Summit. Search the online Vette catalogs. The biggest issue for you will be shipping time and cost.

Hey Red,

Try KTS.DE, they are in Germany and my experience so far is great. If you don't speak German just pop them an email.

I bought an Edlebrock Victor water pump for a Corvette with the 3/4" shaft to use with my March serpentine conversion kit, but then I realized that I needed to get the 5/8" shaft version instead to work with the March pulley; I don't know if the stock mech fan will bolt on to the shorter short pump because I am using an electric fan, but it definitely is 3/16" shorter and that can cause alignment problems with the stock pulleys.

Thanks for your help guys. Looks like I will ditch the chrome and go for a GM Performance 14011012 aluminum pump and maybe get it painted.

Anyone used this pump before?

It looks like a most excellent pump and is equipped to handle roller cams if need be.

"This heavy-duty pump has a reinforced snout, a large 1.50" diameter bearing, a strong 3/4" diameter shaft, and a cast iron rotor. This casting has the short-style mounting legs used on pre-1982 Corvettes, and a large hub with dual bolt patterns. Technical Notes: The aluminum pump housing has a boss which can be drilled and tapped for a cam stop bolt to limit camshaft movement in competition engines equipped with roller or mushroom tappet cams. This water pump can be used with the ZZ4 engine with composite front timing cover. Exchange the 1/4-20 bolt that holds the rear sheet metal plate to the pump to a pan head design bolt P/N 14010976 or equivalent after-market bolt."

I have not used one yet, but I doubt you'll have any problems with it.

Good luck... GUSTO

In the future, if you need parts from the US, you can have the stuff shipped to my US address and I will re-package and send to you in the UK declared as "gift." Contact me if you need assistance.

i'm using that gm performance parts pump with no problems. had to do a little clearancing on it to get it to clear my timing cover and march pulleys, but no big deal.
