Default Proper Piston Ring Gap?

I did a search for this and found related issues with varying responses, mostly relating to KB pistons. I have the Speed Pro Hyper pistons, .040 over. Neither the pistons, nor the rings came with the ring gap recommendations.

After doing the search, I was looking at going .024-.026 for the top and .016-.020 for the second.

Can anyone let me know if this is alright, or if you have the Speed Pro specs?

Default Parts should be good without filing.

Well if the rings came with the pistons as a set then they will work as long as they are installed correctly. Myself i have never filed rings and just veryfied part #s are correct then spaced the gaps around the piston.
Not really a lot of power to be found on blueprinting rig gaps - 5hp max (if your lucky). More important on dedicated race mtrs with higher compression and blow-by. Heck some racers use only 2 rings (no oil ring) and some have even run just 1 ring so u can understand why blow-by is a worry (thats why they run a dedicated crankcase vacuum system too). Another advange of a moderate compression performance engine.

Sorry, i know this doesn't answer your question but thought it may help reduce first time builders stress.

Thanks for the input. I took the general rule of .004 times the bore size, which equaled just over .016. Most of them measured about .017-.018. There were only 2 of them that were a little tight. I filed a small amount off of those two and made them match the others.

I got one piston assembly in and spent about 30 minutes trying to get the second one in before I gave up on the cheap ring compressor. I am going to go swap it out for one of those solid circle compressors, rather than the adjustable one.

Thanks again for the help.

The KB hyper pistons recomend a .026 top ring gap on the top ring because the ring land is located so close to the top of the piston which means it heats up more. By heating up more it causes the ring to expand.

I would compare the ring land from the speed pro to the ring land on the KB and if the ring land is located in the same place then gap it like the KB. If the ring land is located lower on the piston then gap it like you would any other sbc piston.

Only the KB brand needs a wide top ring gap. Speed pro (even though they're hypers) use the normal ring gap which is 0.004 per inch of bore.
