I just purchased my '75 and the PS did not work. I threw in some fluid and it worked for a bit, but it threw all the fluid within a few minutes. I got it up on stands tonight and the fluid is coming from the unit that attaches to the Pitman arm. After cleaning off the gunk, I can see that the bolt sticking out of this unit for attachment to the pitman arm is loose. There is a noticeable amount of movement in steering linkage without this bolt or the Pitman arm moving. It was too messy to tell exactly where on this assembly the leak was eminating from
Any suggestion on if the whole unit has to be replaced or if this can be rebuilt? I assume that based upon the play it must be replaced. Is there a specific peice that I should replace, or the whole assembly?
It can be rebuilt and reinstalled. I don't have any of the papers on hand but many of the members here do in fact have an instructional paper from a master at rebuilding these units and someone will chime in and post or link to it.
Thanks for the reply. I just did some research on parts. That metal clamp is loose and sliding back and forth. I am not sure if I saw a boot or not. It appears that I can get a rebuilt power steering valve or a kit for rebuilding the Pitman arm bolt. Does anyone know if extensive movement of this shaft represents an inability to rebuild it? Also, would the loose Pitman arm bolt cause the heavy leakage?
There is a seal kit as well as a Pitman arm bolt rebuild kit. Any suggestions, or do I need to pull it apart and survey the damage first before ordering a kit.
I have a used ram and valve for sale from a 79 Vette, I thought they were the problem but it was the pump instead. I found this out after I replaced my valve/ram with NEW units. Send me a PM if you are interested in them.
