Default Torque Converter Lockout

What exactly is this? What is it's purpose?
Can someone explain or point me in the right direction where I can find out more about this subject.

I have searched for info on this subject, not finding much.
Call me green, but I've never heard of a converter lockout before.

Thanks guys

Shane

The TCC system is inside the torq converter. At a certain speed, around 40 mph the input and output of the conver are about the same and htdraulic pressure inside the converter allows it to "Lock" meaning it no longer slips. That means better gas milage and less heat.

backing up a tad, you do know that the torq converter is basically a hydraulic clutch right?

Well, when a clutch slips, it generates heat. so with the input and output locked it doesn't slip.
There is a solenoid in the transmission that only allows this to happen in 3rd or 4th with some speed. when you tap the brakes or downshift the TCC solenoid drops out unlocking the converter alowing you to stop in gear without stalling the engine

here is a link explaining it some

Thanks SIXFOOTER
Reason why I am asking,
Hearing a strange noise from trans I believe.
It only happens if you try to really punch it from a stop, sounds like gears grinding almost. I know this is a vague description,
but I have never heard or experienced this before and i'd consider myself a somewhat good mechanic.
I've been around and worked on lots of cars.

Talked with my dad about it today, he was stumped as well but did mention torque converter lockout and we both are wondering if this is what were hearing or causing this noise.

Would like to know for sure what's going on, in case the car has to go to a professional.
My last experience with a tranny shop was not pleasant.

Pull the pan and take a look in there see whats there. Could be a clutch slipping or coming apart. If it is just fine crud in the pan its just normal wear, chunks would be clutch plates coming apart. There is a magnet in the pan, look it over for metal particles. Stick a new filter and fluid in there and see if it helps.
