Torque Converter Lockout
Can someone explain or point me in the right direction where I can find out more about this subject.
I have searched for info on this subject, not finding much.
Call me green, but I've never heard of a converter lockout before.
Thanks guys
Shane
backing up a tad, you do know that the torq converter is basically a hydraulic clutch right?
Well, when a clutch slips, it generates heat. so with the input and output locked it doesn't slip.
There is a solenoid in the transmission that only allows this to happen in 3rd or 4th with some speed. when you tap the brakes or downshift the TCC solenoid drops out unlocking the converter alowing you to stop in gear without stalling the engine
here is a link explaining it some

Reason why I am asking,
Hearing a strange noise from trans I believe.
It only happens if you try to really punch it from a stop, sounds like gears grinding almost. I know this is a vague description,
but I have never heard or experienced this before and i'd consider myself a somewhat good mechanic.
I've been around and worked on lots of cars.
Talked with my dad about it today, he was stumped as well but did mention torque converter lockout and we both are wondering if this is what were hearing or causing this noise.
Would like to know for sure what's going on, in case the car has to go to a professional.
My last experience with a tranny shop was not pleasant.
