If you have changed your plug wires double check the firing order.

Backfiring is a lean condition. Check the idle mixture settings, fuel filter and accelerator pump. What kind of carburetor is this and what is the initial advance set at?

its a Q - jet, dont know what the advance is(what should the initial advance be on a L48 engine with headers)?, where abouts is the fuel filter and is a clean out job, or new one?,

Dave the fuel filter is a small paper one that can easily be replaced. It is located in the fuel inlet on the carb.

Dave, you need to do some reading (that's how I learned it) and ask a ton of questions.

Here is a post that will help you understand timing. Print it and the other articles (links) in this post and keep reading them. Get out under the hood and take a look.

Also, if you have the service manuals for your car, it will help you with the location and changing of the fuel filter. You can get manuals on ebay.
