Default Automatic Window Switch Smoking....AGAIN!

I'm wondering if you guys have had the same problems with the stock window switches as I have. Everytime I put the windows up or down in my '82, I can hear it pop from the spark generated from the crappy connection. I've gone through about five window switches and one of the rear connectors (melted) in the past five years. I'm sick of replacing window switches!!

Does anyone else have this same problem or is it just me?? Anyone used relays with the stock switches?

Sure you can use relays like earlier years-but are you sure its not your connector to the switch or a motor drawing too much?

It's not the connector because even when wired directly to the poles on the switch it does the same thing. Most of the switches I've gone through have just quit working either because of the carbon buildup inside or because the switch just was worn enough that the contacts in there weren't cutting it. I've repaired a few, but typically end up with the same issues again. I've put an Ohm meter on the wires going to the motor to make sure they weren't grounded. It might be the motor drawing too much current I guess, but it happens on both windows and both motors seem to work fine.

It might just be the crappy aftermarket switches I end up with...I dunno.

Hmmmm I have 1 or 2 more GM switches left so maybe when I have to start buying aftermarkets I will have trouble also.Is this in a daily driver? The reason I ask is kind of funny I used to run into women that would put their windows down and then put their purse on the center console and rest their arm on it thus pushing the switch and making it fail premature.Although yours are hidden under the handbreak. Also some people leave their finger on the switch too long after the window is fully down or up.I'm not a motor guru so maybe some of these other guys will chime in and give reasons for your switch being under such stress.

Do your windows go up fast or slow? I would guess slow, but they are supposed to be pretty quick. The switches get hot because of a voltage drop (poor connection) the voltage drop across the switch multiplied by the curent going thru the switch (amps) will result in power consumed (watts) You know how hot those cheap little solder irons from radio shack get? Thats only 35 watts!
Part of your problem will be the slow windows, thats caused by worn parts and dirt. Go thru the window system and get it all it can be. That will significantly reduce the current required to crank them up. The switches are not real high quality either, but lessening the load will help

This Vette has been in the family for about 18 years (I've had it for 8 years) and I replaced the window motors and went through the tracks a LONG time ago. Windows absolutely fly up and down! The switches are the only thing driving me
