rewiring neutral safety switch.....strange side effects
I installed a kill switch in the purple wire of the neutral safety switch, but it’s not working exactly as I planned.
Flip the switch once, turn the key, engine starts, shift from park to neutral, flip the switch again, shift into drive.
Shifting into drive without flipping the switch causes the flywheel to zing!.
It does work as an on off switch to the neutral safety switch, but it also is doing something to the starter to cause the flywheel to zing. This, I did not expect. Is there any way to rewire it so the flywheel doesn’t zing and it is just a one time switch?
It did a lot of other peculiar things, but they didn’t happen repeatedly, so I figured there were those fluke things that come with old wiring.
If your only purpose was to substitute something for a malfunctioning neutral start switch, I would suggest two alternatives: 1) buy the right switch and install it; 2) if you don't like alternative #1, get ready to have a big "BUBBA" sign pasted on your back! Seriously, whatever reason you had to bypass the neutral start switch should be reconsidered. In addition to the problems you presently have, you will inherit a bunch of risk with your rewire approach. There were lots of people (and lots of kids) injured simply because cars did not have that device [until the 1960's]. That's why the feds made them manditory.
Sounds like your back-feeding power to the starter solenoid
or feeding power to the solenoid when you pass neutral

Then if you want a hidden kill switch it would be an easy install
It started out as a simple in line switch. It worked twice that way. Then the connection on the neutral safety switch finally bit the dust. So I had to cut the second purple wire and loop them together without the wires going to the neutral safety switch.
Why did I do it? Oh mostly because I don't have another car.
Am I going to put a new neutral safety switch in? You can bet on it. I was just hoping someone might know why it is doing what it is doing. Thanks jcswm!
Yes, it started out as a theft deterrent. The connection on the neutral safety switch went bad. It went from theft deterrent to a device so I could drive the car.
The easiest "no start" kill switch to install is a simple toggle switch installed in the power line to the coil. Cut the power to the coil....no engine. Hide the switch under the dash somewhere. Good luck.
