I am a new owner of a '77 vette.
Looking to do some much needed maint. under the hood.
My question to the forum is: Chilton's or Haynes? (Or another that I have not considered.
What manuals do you folks think are the most benifical to the "weekend mechanic"?
Thanks for any advice.
Kenny

I was looking at both online last week...I am afraid that with all the suspension, engine and tran mods the books won't do me much good. I really was looking for a exploded view of the doors with all parts and part #'s....I'll start a new post looking for that...
If you are stock still maybe look for a shop manual for the year you own...
I'd like one for the 69. Was looking on Ebay and noticed someone in Minnesota has reprints for $20.00 + shipping. But...There's a disclaimer stating there may be blanks spots, light print, etc.

A better place to buy one of these?
They are all going to come with that disclaimer.
One of the Forum vendors is as good as any. Be sure to purchase the "Index to the AIM" for your year, it will make finding things easier.
I also vote for the AIM + GM service manual. With these two I was able to do wonders with my vette with a well below average mechanical skills.
I first bought the AIM from Corvette Central but it was a REAL poor quality copy! 30% of the pages are either blank or unreadable! Then I bought another new one off ebay along with its index and it was a MUCH better one.
AIM, GM Service Manual, Chevy Power Book (4th ed.), and my treasured copy of the Chevrolet 1953-1982 Corvette Parts and Illustration Catalog.
All thes books seem great. But if I can ask a quistion here, I got a 68 coupe and I keep coming up with things in the electrical sections of the AIM that just don't match. Seems these books cover early cars and not late ones like mine. I have not seen any manuals listed for early or late cars, this may be a problem for opther years also. But the quistion is have you seen a AIM or similar for a late car? Thanks

Someone else will have to say for '68. The first C3 AIM I have is Mid America's '69.
So I've got them all for my '75
Haynes
Chiltons
GM Service & Overhall ('74 Service, '74 Overhall & '75 Suppliment)
GM AIM
Shop Manual
They all have things they handle better than the others. I check them all to make sure I read and see as many pictures/opinions as possible.
Overall the GM stuff is the best of the bunch. However, even there I found an error that nearly caused me to break the bottom of my rear quarter panel.

Good idea and I have the same. Sometimes I have a problem understanding what one manual will say, but after I read another on the same subject, it will clear things up for me.

The AIM is available for each year from 1956 thru 1982. I think 1956/57 are a single document.

Do you have a specific example? Some parts entered the line as a "subassembly", and so the individual parts in the subassembly don't show up in the AIM (but DO show up in the parts catalog).
The A.I.M. will give you all the detail available for the final assembly line (only). Major sub-assemblies are not covered in the A.I.M. (ie, engine, transmission, door subs, T-top subs, etc. Engine and tranny detail can be found in the Haynes, Helm or Chilton manuals. For "difficult" sub-assemblies, I would recommend a query on this site for folks who have rounded-up those exploded assembly views.
