Default HEI Conversion

Well, after having installed a new motor and finally starting it up, now it won't start. I was having problems keeping it running but now I get no spark at all. I think my MSD box died and instead of replacing it I'm going to install the HEI distributior that came with the engine. Is the below statement true?

"Replace the resistance wire that ran to your points system, from the fuseblock, with a 12guage wire (pink insulated if you want to remain factory compliant) and hook it up to the HEI "BAT" terminal. "

Is this all I have to do? Seems too easy. What about the other connections on the HEI distributor? Thanks for any replies.

I just did the same thing. Yes. Thats right. Youn can actually find and key on 12v and use it if you dont feeli like replacing the wire.

I didnt think regular points had a resistance wire. I thought TI ignition only had the resistance wire. Im sure Im wrong.

Anyway any 12v key on + will work.

All points systems used the resistor wire. Earlier systems used the ballast resistor. For HEI, you are correct: Bypass the resistor wire and run 12VDC to the "+" side of the HEI.

Uh, NO, not quite....the yellow and brown wires under the dash will be key ON, but are fused individually, the ignition should run off the exact same pin that black resistance wire comes outta on the bulkhead connector....

Gentlemen, UPDATE!
The new HEI system is in and the car runs great. I can't believe how much better it runs compared to the old distributor, coil, and MSD combo. For some reason it now shifts through the gears without grinding or binding. Weird stuff going on here. Thanks a bunch.
