Default checking my timing

Im having a few problems w/ my 77. (see link) Im trying to check the timing so i read Lars paper and i think im ready to go but...how do you guys get power to the timing light w/ the battery behind the seat? It says battery + ground, which if the battery's under the hood is fine but behind the seat is a little tougher. Also Lars says to measure the circumference of the balancer...does anyone know an easy way to do this? Just looking at where its located it seems like a pain. Last but not least, yesterday it would idle like crap and almost stall, now it seems to run fine. No vaccum leaks, fuel looks good so i figure timing but i'll take any suggestions. thanks.

Get a feed for the timing light from the alternator.

Or pull another vehicle beside the vette and use that battery.

The red terminal with the rubber boot on it is 12v. Pull the boot off the terminal and hook on there. Just be sure not to contact the alternator body with that same terminal {short! lots of sparks!!}

I also use the alternator for my positive side connection. I remove the rubber boot from the connector, and clamp it there. I usually use the bracket mount as the ground just to keep the wires close together.

And don't forget to let the wires drape down on the exhaust manifolds so it melts through them.

Also, make sure you hit the nose of the timing light on the alternator fan a few times while your pointing it too

Honestly,Before you hook up to the alt, be sure to tuck the wires out of the way so they wont touch the exhaust.
