Getteing Shark back from paint next week. Does anyone have experience with re-glueing the original vette flags, engine letters/numbers ect.? What adhesive should be used and should I have to do anything to the new paint under the emblems? On the back of the emblems, there is a sticky rubber, should I remove this or just apply adhesive to that? Thanks in advance. L8TER, Paul.
When my '81 was painted a few years ago, I carefully removed all the original emblems and then reattached them using 3M weatherstrip adhesive.
On the '81, the only stuck-on emblem is the crossed-flag piece on the nose. I carefully sawed it off with a thin blade from behind, which pretty much ruined the double-sided GM tape. So I cleaned all the tape off and then used the 3M stuff to put it back on. All the other pieces used screws or speed-nuts.
..........While we are on this subject, can someone tell me if my L-48 emblems are glued on, or are screwed(bolted) into my hood? Thanks PM '74 Turbocharged 350, "Molested to Perfection" class of '71
Look on the inside of your hood and nose. If you see little pins sticking thru , then they are drilled. If you want a very strong glue to use, try Automotive Goop . You can find it at Menards and Ace Hardward stores. I use this stuff on everything - it is much stronger than super glue and is clear. Im ready to buy some stock in this company ! It is a very useful product indeed. Withstands alot of heat too.
This is going to make people puke. But I used clear silicon Plumber's Goop. The stuff is amazing. It holds the emblems in place. Then, if I need to remove them, they come off. You're supposed to use the retaining bolts, speed nuts, whatever. This, I found, was a pain in the butt.
3M Auto tape it is. This will be the easiest job when shark returns. All lights, complete interior, mouldings, mirrors, ect. will have to be re-installed again. Can't wait to get started!! :smash: L8TER, Paul.
Thanks Rumpity-Rump (also the sound my car makes at idle.....)
There's some metal trim under my hood preventing me from seeing if there are screws or bolts holding the emblems on. Guess I'll just have to take it off unless anybody know already what's under there. Appreciate your suggestion on a good glue also. Regards, PM, Tubocharged 350, "Molested to Perfection" class of '71
