I'm very interested in this engine, but I need a couple questions answered so I can make up my mind.
1) No offense to 76sting, but I need to know if this will fit under a stock '80 hood. His seems to have been modified (looks good tho').
2) How many miles have you guys got on yours?. (Too many crate motor horror stories out there where the engine ran strong initially then grenaded because of inferior internals etc).

TIA for all helpful replies
I can't help regarding the stock 80's hood, but my engine just blew from them!!! less than 500 miles
I will start a post soon trying to see what they are going to do for me before I start ripping into them.
haaa I wish. If I did not have to change out heads and everything else I would.
Right now I am pricing out a new block, Scat forged crank, Scat I-beam rods, SRP pistons, etc. I need to make the bottom end strong so I can stick a 200 shot of NOS on it.
So what exactly happened to your engine? Did you spray it?
Believe it of not nope... I am completely shocked that a block would crack with less then 1000 miles on it. This was the first time at the track so it is not like I am beating on it.
1 Piston broke and the block cracked in 1 cylinder in 2 spots.
my parts from summit have just arrived.
but i dont know if i can use the distributor i chose.
i chose the " MAA - 8548201c ".
can i use this one or should i use one with an melonized steel gear?
i wrote a email to yearone but there is no answer.
by day i never got an answer if i ask a technical question.
how much timing you are driving @ idle & total on this engine?
and how can i identify my vortec heads? there is no sawtooth in the front of the heads, there is no number inside.
there only 4 bolts on each side of the manifold, thats all.

Hey was there any noticeable port work on the exhaust ports? Supposedly the Year One 350s have "ported" vortecs.....just wonder if they really do touch up the heads. Did yours come with a dyno sheet? I would think if the intake only has 4 bolts on each side, those are vortecs, to my knowledge they are the only SBC heads that use 8 intake bolts....but I could be wrong.
I am interested in this engine also. I have searched the net for days looking at other forums, trying to find people running this engine and I have found VERY little real world experience with it. You would think that 400hp for $3k, there would be a TON more people running them. I am curious if they are really making that much power once you get em in and running.

You will have to match up your cam choice with the type of gear on the disty to use. Call the cam manufacture and get their recomendations on what type of metal to use. The disty is fine, but you may need to change the gear type, which is a 5 min job.

Ajrothm there are a ton of folks here running them.... They may have bought them from a different supplier, but at the end of the day only a few really build and supply the engines to Year One. As an example Derebery Performance in Pottsboro TX is one of the suppliers to Year One and I know a few people bought directly from them. The heads are ported and my HP and TQ was around 430. I know it would be a drive for you, but you could buy it from them directly (In Pottsboro TX) and they will dyno it right in front of you....just a thought!
Type in Derebry in the search engine under C3 and you should find a lot.

In a previous email, someone was wondering what the components are in the YearOne crate motor. Since I'm thinking about the same motor, I emailed YearOne and here are the responses from Marty at YearOne:
"We know the connecting rods and cylinder heads are Chevrolet. The manifold is usually from Pro Products."
"The pistons are Federal Mogul, the cam is by Camshaft Machine and the fasteners are ARP. The rocker arms are Chevrolet and the springs are Qualcast."

Year One uses multiple supliers so it will be difficult to say who uses what in what engine, but you likely will not find many forged components. Also ARP was not included in my engine as an example.
I finally decided to replace the engine in my '73 and I settled on the Year One 400 HP crate engine. I'll post info as I install the engine.
I ordered the engine from Year One on 24 Aug (Fri) and the freight company attempted to deliver it on 28 Aug (Tue). I was finally able to arrange delivery today (Thur) and it showed up this morning. Year One told me one to two weeks for delivery; I had it in less than one week. Shipping to NW Florida was $130.
The invoice shows the engine came from Hi-Tech Engine Components of Salt Lake City, UT. I believe they call it the CH350PC05.
I know the first question will be: "How much power?" Here's the dyno sheet that came with my engine:
Back to the topic of timing marks. I would recommend not going with a timing tape. The easiest way to get timing marks is to get a cover for the balancer. I have one on my engine and it works just fine. It also provides correct timing marks even if the outer hub slips. Summit has them for around $28. Here's a link.
