okay...my second visit to the smog *****...
"you car passed the emmisions test, but it's
missing the fillpipe sensor" ...what the f@#! is a
"fillpipe sensor"...the jerk explained that it's
suppose to connect the carb to the a/c or something
and make the rpm's go up when the a/c is turned on
then he goes on to say "we just need to see that
it's there..we don't test to see if it works"
arrrrrrrrhhhhhhh!!!!!!!....dayem...that' s cali for ya!!!
so what is a fillpipe sensor? is it cheap? is it easy to find?
can i fabricate something that looks like it so i'll pass
the visual?
on another note...i've seen some 350 motors advertised in
CHP with 410 horses...if i were to put one of these in my vette
would i be able to pass the smog inspection? seems like i'll
be putting up my vette for sale pretty soon :cry
and get a '69 later on... ;)
what's a reasonable price for a '79 L-48 in decent condition...meaning
it's a reliable daily driver?
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Re: what is a fillpipe sensor??? #$%#$@!!! (daily_driver)
These morons should leave 20 year old Vettes alone. They do where I live, jeesh how many 20 year old cars are on the road ? and how many of those are dirven every day.
It's just common sense but apparently there is none down there
Re: what is a fillpipe sensor??? #$%#$@!!! (parttime)
Fillpipe sensor? Sounds like a "sky hook" or left handed hammer" type thing
My '81 just has a solenoid that opens the throttle slightly when the A/C is on. It's supposed to increase the rpm by 100. Could he be talking about something else that does the same job?
Glad I don't live there - they'd probably shoot me if I took my vehicles out onto the public highway
Good luck
Paul

I agree with Paul79. Your emissions guy is talking about the AC carb solenoid. I suspect he/she is making up the term "fillpipe sensor" to ensure you will be impressed with his/her specialized language. I've never heard the term "fillpipe sensor."
:)

that makes more sense...is this a part i can pick up from autozone?
or does it need to be special ordered?
Re: what is a fillpipe sensor??? #$%#$@!!! (parttime)
You can get one at GM, a salvage yard (any Q-Jet will do) or if Lars sees this thread, he might have one available. From GM they are not cheap. As you seem to want to simply give the appearance of functionality I would go with the salvage yard. We do not have Autozone in Canada so I do not know what they carry.
Re: what is a fillpipe sensor??? #$%#$@!!! (paul79)
The fillpipe sensor is easily missed on visual inspection due to it's obfuscated bi-laterally transjuxtapositional rotation behind the Blandsmore coil. On later model Q-jets it was relocated internally requiring the use of an osmoticonic fillpipe array.
:bs
Seriously, I think that guy was yanking your chain. Since you say he passed your vehicle otherwise, I'd just take it to another shop that doesn't do "fillpipe" inspections.
