Check your spark plugs and ignition leads. Sounds like it is missing on one cylinder introducing raw fuel to exhaust.

I have a '79 with aftermarket pipes that does the same thing. It is more predominent when I accelerate hard and then let off. I didn't have it when I had straight dual exhaust... nothing else changed except for the side pipes and voila! I started hearing that. I did some research and it did indeed point to raw fuel that hits the hot exhaust and makes that sound. In my case I think it is too rich of a carb setup and not enough restriction. Here is a decent Q&A I found about it.

Whats your plug gap? 69 should be no more than .035 on any engine produced due to the compression ratio. The more pressure, the harder it is to for a spark to jump the gap.

Could somebody please confirm if popping on deacceleration with a 4 spd is a sign of a lean carb and needs to be richened up??

thanks!!

Default Checked plugs...

I checked plug gap it is good.. I have new wires on it.. No leaks at hedder or collector..
I am starting to think it may be carb issue?
Thanks again guys..

YES

Check for other vacuum leaks first. Then read plugs.

in the old days, bad points would do this. But, i cant imagine anyone still runs points, so i'll ask, what carb? is it the actual L88 carb or what? and when did this problem start, ie, did it run perfect, and then one day.....
