Default 69' Side Pipes

On-line stores sells reproductions of 69' side exhaust system that are less expensive than original ones.
The side exhaust covers are made of fiber glass (not chromed aluminium as the original ones). On the web I've seen several pictures of these covers with a nice chrome look...how is it possible??? Only with painting (special hi-temp paint?)?

I know that it's possible to chrome plastic (Vacuum metallizing process), but I don't know if it's possible with fiber glass (I think that's not a very smooth surface...)

Another tech question :

Does this side pipes exhaust kits fits only with stock headers? I've just bought Heddman hedders 1-5/8'' Tubes 3'' Collector

I was trying to "open"this area up awhile back, but got bumped.Pull up cosmichrome, and check it out.A guy here lo0cal had his financier buy one of these at 10k,and I was suppose to spray it at my shop, and do all the prep, and they wanted to give me pennies,so I bailed.End of story.I can get you a set done, tho'.I know someone else who has one of the machines about 40 miles from me.

I've never had factory side pipes, but sale alot of parts all the time, and in the catalogs. From what I have seen, the side pipes go to the exhaust manifolds, but a good muffler shop, should be able to reduce from your headers, and bend to meet the pipes, but they would have to be cut some.I've got modified big tube Camaro hooker side mounts on my 75 L82,and I'm about tired of them. They look cool, but when I do the 68,I think that I am going w/headers,and run it out the a..end.I must be getting old..................................... ...

Not old just wiser! As a matter of fact, I thinking of rigging up my own 69 side pipes for my white '73. I just ordered the stuff tonight. So hopefully I'll have enough time to get them done by atleast next sunday!

Kevin, I was just wondering approx. how much will it cost to get the fiberglass covers chromed? If you don't know thats fine, but can you give me a guess? (You don't have to ask your friend because I don't know how well I will like them yet). I know on the yellow 73 they were loud as hell on the highway turning 3200 RPMS! But I believe it had glasspacks?
