Re: 767 down in NY!!! (zwede)
Update: Not a 767. It was an Airbus A300 headed for the Dominican Republic from JFK.
No word on if it was a terrorist attack or not.
Currently 8 buildings on fire.

Engine said to 'fall off' prior to crash. Can these engines actually fall off unless there is an explosion??

It's not the first time American has lost an engine if that's the case.

Re: 767 down in NY!!! (xrated)
Engines at their attach points on the wing pylons are designed to seperate from the aircraft in the event of a failure. They are however not supposed to cause any more damage to the aircraft. If the plane was in take-off mode (full power) though, really bad things can happen at this critical time. That this SEEMS to be the case given that the only info I have heard suggests a failure and not terrorism. Way too early to know for sure but we did not need this at all. So sorry for the unfortunates...... :( :(

The networks are now showing an engine on the ground in someone's yard. Airplane crashed about 4 blocks away... Looks like a mechanical to me...

Sounds pretty similar to that DC-10 in Chicago about 20 years ago, doesn't it?
Hopefully they can determine the exact cause before the whole airline industry goes down the tubes.
Bless those that were lost....

Re: 767 down in NY!!! (72 Stingray)
That 10 that went down in Chicago had a pylon seperation from the wing because of improper procedures in the maintenance manual.

Re: 767 down in NY!!! (71coupe)
American Airlines DC-10 May 25,1979 at Chicago O'Hare lost one engine on takeoff roll.
El Al Boing 747 Freighter October 4, 1992 in Amsterdam. Lost two engines right after takeoff.
There have been other instances of engines falling off airlines but those landed successfully.
