Well. I just wanted to run by everyone what I have purchased to throw in my car so far. I am wondering if any of you have opinions on the setup thus far. I dont really plan on racing my car around. It will be a daily driver that I just want to enjoy driving.

So far I have
Crane powermax 2040 cam part number 114132
dart iron eagle 180 cc heads
edelbrock 2101 intake
stock carb
hooker comp headers leading to true duel flow master setup

I plan on changing my gears to either 3.73 or 4.10 in the near future as well. Thanks for your time.

I think thats very reasonable combo. If no problems with the stock carb keep it, Any problems with it..just replace with a Holley SA670..

The 3.73 gear will help you feel the new low end Power. But will affect the cruise on Interstate quite a bit..Youll notice the RPM's at 75mph will be way up.

When I built my Nova a few years ago, I started with a plane jane 307 auto. I painted it, put in a well-warmed up 350 and promptly blew up a couple of turbo 350's. So I put in a Turbo 400 and then I blew up the 10 bolt 3:08 rear end of course.

First I replaced the gears & stuff, stayed with the 10-bolt, but I used 3:23 gears. That car turned out to be a real freeway killer! It was fast as hell off the line and had lots of power.

Then I blew that axle up, and went to a 12-bolt. I wanted and bought, Richmond 4:11 gears for it. Wow what a mistake. Wrong gears for a car with the automatic.

The car completely lost all streetability. I actually sold it a year later. I ran into the guy that bought the car from me about two years after he got it from me. I asked him how my homebuilt 350 and Turbo 400 were holding up. Know what he said?

"Hell the engine and trans are perfect! Havent changed a thing on the car except those damned rear end gears you had in it."

So in one car, you have two owners that both thought the 4:xx series gears were too low for it. Should have used a 3:xx series carrier in that car, and kept the 12-bolt. I'd still have that thing probably ... it ran like a rocket ship and was very pretty to look at. It was a '70 Nova two door.

..... I'm not-sure, but I think the '81s have a one-year-only/computer-run carb & ignition system:
"IF" this is correct, you might need to run an earler-style (pre-'79? ) HEI and carb.....

If the car will never/rarely see the highway-speeds for extended periods of time, and you'll use back-roads and/or stop-and-go driving, the 4.10s will really wake-up the performance, and the 'smiles-per-miles' ratio, too, but it'll drink gasoline by the bucket.....

I dont have knowlege of those later carbs..But my guess would be you will have trouble dialing it in to the new flow and CR and ect. Same with the Dist., it may not allow for a decent advance curve?? Again..me no expert on later GM emmissions tech with new upgrade components. Maybe someone will have some hard tech. answer

I dont see why there might be a prob using my stock carb/dist with this setup. It is a pretty mild cam. If anything I should be able t make it by with just getting some bigger jets on the carb if neccessary?

I have the same cam in my motor (H266 is the non-computer version). It gives good low-end torque and I was happy with the 3.55 gears I put in the rear. Of course I like it even better now that I put in the 200-4R trans. I got ok numbers on the chassis dyno of 220RWHP with stock exhaust.
It will be better now that the carb is tuned in better.
