Default Rearend (differential) removal

I posted once before on this subject and you guys were most helpful. But i have an issue. I have all the bolts disconnected, all the supports, the drive shaft, two half shafts.. everything.. and i still cant get it off the car.. There are 4, what looks like, guide bolts that go through the "cover" up to a support across the top of the diff.. but there are no nuts on the bolts and it doesnt appear that the cover is threaded in these places.. just looks like guides.. My question is should i just pry the hell out of it or is there some trick that i have over looked.. thanks..

1977 coupe
Stock differential

Do you have the cross-member with the differential attached off the frame, or is it still on the frame?

It is muich easier to drop the cross-member to unfasten the top four bolts that hold the differential in place. Once you remove them, the differential will be easily seperated with a wrap of a hammer handle.

You can cut an access hole in the floor to unfasten the four bolts, but that isn't the right way to do it.

The diff is hanging by the upper crossmember and front pinion support. The best way to drop it would be to remove the two bolts at each end of the crossmember. This thread has helpful hints http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1826328.
The 4 bolts that thread into the diff cover from the top are inside the crossmember and are difficult to get at unless you have the body off. Be sure to get a floor jack under the diff before you try to seperate the crossmember. I can send you some pic's tomorrow if that would be helpful....GP

Now all thats left is getting the proper torque specs for the cover and mounting bolts and i should be good to go

You should invest in the Chassis Service Manual and the Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) for your year car. You can see how the car was put together and how to repair, replace and service many of the components.
