I do recall a adjusting procedure in my service manual, however, I cannot remember it.

When they are at their rest position, the wipers should be flush against the bottom of the windshield. If one, or both, are not, the arm(s) needs to be pulled from the gear on which they ride and reinstalled properly. This assumes one or both of the arms is not bent and otherwise in good condition.

There is an adjustment on the wiper arms where they connect together at the wiper motor - loosen the two adjustment screws on the slide coupling and you can set the wipers wherever you want to avoid them hitting each other.

... and when you test them after adjusting them, keep your hand under the arm of one as it moves. That way you'll be able to lift it up if it looks like it's about to tangle with the other wiper.
Your friend is lucky. When I drive my '81 my passengers start hitting me

Lars is correct about the adjustment. The way I adjusted mine was to turn on the wipers and use the over-ride switch to turn off the wipers at the point of contact. I adjusted them at this point. There is a procedure in the AIM that I used. You cannot do this because later Sharks without the wiper door do not have the wiper over-ride switch. Do the wipers "park" if the key power is turned off while they are sweeping? You may be able to do it my way if the wipers stay "unparked" when the key is turned off while they are running.
