Default 68 with brake problem

Both front brakes locked up after a hour drive through three small towns. I normally have a very "soft" brake pedel. I noticed the pedel was getting harder and harder. About 6 miles out of town I could smell the pads getting hot. Stoped and the pads were "smokeing" hot. Pushing on the pedel was like pushing on a large rock. It would not move. Rear were ok. When I tryed to move the car the rear wheels would spin. I seperated the MC from the power booster and the pedel could go to the floor and the front brakes released. But when I put the MC back on the front breakes locked up again. Unbolted the MC until the brakes released and drove home (slowly and carefully). At home I reseated the MC with the booster and the brakes worked fine. Would appreciate your thoughts.

Front brake hoses sometimes go bad inside and fluid goes to the pads but don't return. I have seen this many times front and rear but not two at once. The locked up rotors is what happens so I would replace the hoses if they are old.
Also check that the rod is not pushing on the M/C when you tighten it up.
Adjust it so the rod just toches the piston.

Or the adjustment on the rod is not correct, which covers the vent hole.

Rubber goes bad inside hose.

Found this out today when I changed my calipers and still had the lock problem. Changed the hose and it was perfect!!

Default 68's brakes

Had the same thing happen to my original owner 68 that had the original front rubber brake hoses. Only one wheel was smokin, thought the car was on fire. The right front hose was at fault, replaced both fronts. This was in 1985, still no problems.

The hoses are most likely the problem. Go ahead and change all four.

Cool I just figured out how to multiquote.
I will be replaceing all the brake lines while I am doing a body off project. The body is coming off tomarrow if all goes as plan. When I posted this thread I had just finished my last time out in the vette before I started this project. It was to be a great time with the car and grandson who is helping me. We did have a good time!!How time flies. About 20 years ago I put on a set of SS calipers and the SS braided hoses. Thank you both for your replies. charlie
