Default Adding Tilt tele column Question

Hi Everyone,

I think one of Jims papers may have picked out the problem with my tilt tele installation. I am adding tile to my standard non tilt '71. I bought a column and installed it, but the starter will not engage now.

In Jims doc he said,"you will need to twist the three connectors on your vehicle wiring harness 180 degrees to convert from the switch on a standard (non-adjustable) steering column to the switch on a T&T column. "

Does anyone know what threes connectors on what wiring harness?

THANKS!!!

Rob

There are two plugs in your vehicle wiring harness that connects to the ignition switch on top of the column jacket under the dash. Since a T&T column ignition switch operates in the opposite direction from a standard (non-adjustable) column switch, the electrical contact blades in the two switches are opposite each other. So you have to twist the plugs on your vehicle harness so that they will match the blades on the T&T column switch.

You really cannot install the plugs incorrectly. You either twist them to fit your new column or they won't install at all.

If the steering column is the only thing that was changed, you would certainly be led to think that the new T&T column is the culprit.

You may have to adjust the ignition switch on the column. It needs to be properly synchronized with the ignition key/lock cylinder. Or the switch may need to be replaced.

I have complete instructions on adjusting the ignition switch at www.Corvettefaq.com

If you need more information, just post again.

Jim

I might have been wrong in my paper. I believe that there are two connectors not three that connect to the ignition switch.

Ahh got it - THANKS. So that is to say if they are plugged and they fit, they are already reversed....

I have the column down as far as the blinker switch (it is out) After reading your SUPER helpful paper it looks like i am almost where i need to be to adjust the switch!

I will continue this evening - THANKS AGAIN!

To adjust the ignition switch you just need to drop the column so that you can get at the two fasteners that connect the switch to the column jacket.

Now there is another possibility. If it seems that you just don't have sufficient travel of the metal rod to allow the switch to reach all of its positions (i.e. START, RUN, OFF, OFF-LOCK, and ACCESSORY) it could be that someone took the column apart and reassembled the plastic sector incorrectly to the die cast rack inside the column head.

The big tooth on the sector must align with the big opening on the rack.

FOUND THE PROBLEM! THANKS Everyone - especially Jim Shea, and Jim70 for all of your ENDLESS and VERY PATIENT help!

The "big tooth" on the sector was sheered off. So at first glace with no pressure on it everything looked fine and lined up. But when they key turned, the sector moved (that is what I saw through the side) but never moved the rack. I defeted it with a small cut off screw driver and got the starter to turn *WOHOOOOOOOOOO*. I was begining to think I needed and exorcism!

Now I just need to figure out the blinkers and I am on the road!!!!!
