Hi there, I have a stock 74 with l48.... That being said, im looking for 350-400 hp out of my motor when im finished. Is the 195 hp l48 block strong enough to build that high. (from what i have read its a 2 bolt) Or should i just drive it like it is and save for a crate 350-383 4 bolt?
Don't be sure that it is a 2 bolt, I also have a 74 L48, it has a 4 bolt block and the number matches. It's easy to pull the pan and look for yourself, costs you a gasket set.
If it's a 2 bolt, I'd go for the crate engine, otherwise look at what condition the blocks in and then make your decision.
Either way, drive it until you have the cash.
My $0.02
A two bolt block will handle 400hp.
You could consider an Edelbrock top end kit that would get you in the 400hp range.
Spend between $1800 and $2000 and easily do it in a weekend with any skill at all.
The only risk here is the condition of the bottom end and if it can handle the extra power.
For another $1500 you could get around 450hp in a 383.
After a complete rebuild to around 360hp of the L48 in my '75,
I bought a 383 crate and wish I would have done it in first place.
There is no comparison to the low end torque of the stroker. Something that every C3 needs.
