Default Dash Lights??

What is involved with changing the speedo and tach bulbs on a 77? Can't see them anymore at night??

Thanks

Default I believe the 77 dash is styled like the 68...

....so I gather that it's the same pain in the @zz that mine is. Last time I dropped my dash; I extended the harness to the lamps so that I could at least reach up and do some bulbs from underneath.

Nevertheless, to do the lamps on my 68, I had to actually pull the dash to reach behind. Quite painful.

Not fun. Take all of the upper dash screws out and push it up, then you can lift the center cluster and slide it forward. Remove the screws holding up the steering column under the front of the dash and the screws inside the door jamb at the top of the dash pad so it can slide forward.

I extended all of my lamp wires too and while I was at it I bought all new non GM sockets. The stock sockets are so cheap, they fall apart when you try to pull them out to change the bulbs. The factory should have made all of the wires longer. It would have made it so much easier to pull the dash out.

The last time I pulled my dash, three wires broke. I just buy the cheap 2-circuit socket innards from AutoZone, then use the contacts and wires from those to fix the stock sockets and put a bit of extra length on the wires. After this fix, I think over half of my sockets on the speedo and tach will have been repaired.

Default yeah, I installed new sockets too...

I think I've got them all replaced....maybe 1 or 2 left. I also installed 2connectors so I can disconnect all the lamp harness sections from underneath in case I have to pull on the dash itself. Of course, I solder and heat shrink every one of these painful little things.
