I have removed the hood from my 77 to allow an upcoming engine swap. The hood has the ugly blanket type of insulation. I have researched on the Forum and it appears that many members have removed the insulation without causing any problems. Since I already have the pins attached to my hood for holding the insulation I am hesitant to cut them off. I would rather install a smooth, clean, thin insulator that could be cut to fit and painted black. Does this type of product exist? Did not find mention of it on the forum or in catalogs?
It would have to be custom. I'm looking into doing the same thing and am deciding between leaving it bare...since I don't have pins, and making a thin smooth good looking blanket to insulate the hood a bit.

What type of material could be used for a smooth heat resistant blanket? If no one knows of an appropriate material does this mean that the only options are an ugly fiberglass type blanket or nothing? If that is the case how difficult would it be to remove the pins without damaging the hood?
What about the Dynamat hood liner? I've never used one but they seem to be pretty adaptable, cut and stick and all.
Thanks for the info. I went to the link you suggested and looked at the DynaMat but I saw that it was still 3/4" thick and it was faced with foil. It looks like the DynaLiner is a more appropriate product for me. It is heat resistant, black and can be ordered in a 1/8" thickness. This is important because i am using an AirGap intake and I need clearance.
Now, can anyone tell me how to remove the pins used for holding the hood blanket? They are glued on with an unknown adhesive. How can I get them off without damaging the underside of the hood? I know the liner will cover any mess but I don't want to damage the hood.
As stated here many times before, the OEM insulation blanket was for SOUND reduction purposes, not HEAT.
I did not know that this issue had been definitively resolved. If it is true that the only purpose was for sound reduction then I will simply remove the pins and paint it black.
What solvent can be used without damaging the fiberglass?
I used a hair dryer to get the adhesive soft on mine grabed the pin portion with a pair of pliers and the came right off I used some body shop pre clean to get what was left did a light wet sand and painted
