Headers, Alternator brackets
Hi... I have a 327-365 in my 70 vette with the alternator on the drivers side and a short water pump. I put edelbrock heads on with accessory holes. I am using the header mount brackets, its flimsy at best. and a stock v belt. Anyone use another set up for the drivers side swp and lets keep in mind hood clerance..

why dont you use the stock small block brackets for a 70 and up heads with accessory hole brackets? (the stock upper and the lower one(cast iron) that bolts in front of the head). Why did you have to use that bracket that bolts to the header?

Get a '72-82 alternator bracket. It is cast iron and bolts to the cylinder head. And since GM designed it, pulleys align properly and you will have hood clearance.
Zip has it for $75 but call them first to check on stock.
The two bolt holes on the left mount the bracket to the front of the head.
Here are a couple of pics from my '75. First one is the old engine but you can see the bracket mounted to the front of the cylinder head.
Second photo shows more of the alignment and clearances.

More info here from Doc Rebuild showing the two setups (his catalog is great for this stuff):
64-71 in the lower right corner: http://www.docrebuild.com/dr-r-web/GEN.pdf
72-82 on the left side. GM went from the iron mount to a aluminum one in 79. I like the iron for strength: http://www.docrebuild.com/dr-r-web/ALTERNAT.PDF

66-71 all used an alternator bracket that bolted to the exhaust manifold. The bracket that bolted to the heads did not come out till 1972.

If your 70 is same as my 68....
If your 70 used the same short water pump as my 68, then I recommend getting alternator bracket with Casting number 3951337.
I was lucky that my driver's side head had holes in the front. I struggled for years with that crappy header support bracket.
I got mine off an early 70's SBC chevy pickup at the junkyard...cost me 5 bucks.
I sent you an email via the forum.....

Trouble is that everyone seems to be sold out right now of the newer bracket.

I like how the alternator mounts, it seems like it will be perfect... Now since the bracket has been bought lets shift gears a bit and talk about part 2 of this question... Of course now i'd like to put a nice chrome altternator on the car... but i not only notice differant amps but i see they are 1 wire hook up... mine has alot more then that hooked up in the back... would converting to a 1 wire set up by pass the dash gauge making it non working? O'reilly Auto have one - a Mr Gasket chrome 100 amp alt (pt # 5122) but they want $240 for it - they do have a low price gaurantee so if you find it cheaper somewhere else they have to match it (I wear them out on that gaurantee - when they see me walking in with a print-out in hand they know it is fixin to be on). Corvette Central have one for $170 - here is the link -
