I know that our cars use a different line pressure than other GM vehicles. I have a hydraboost already installed & the jeep box goes in when the engine comes out. I saw the pump that DB pointed out in another thread & like the idea of separate returns even though everything is working fine now. The question is: Once I have the jeep box & hb both installed and all the hp lines replaced with the correct braided style, is there any reason not to go with a std GM higher pressure PS pump?
As I recall, the need for the lower pressure was the power steering control valve. It was more sensitive and needed a pump with lower pressure. If you're using a Jeep box or Steeroids kit I don't think the higher pressure would hurt anything. Just make sure the pressure lines are rated for the extra pressure and you'll be fine.
You only need enough pressure to turn the steering wheel full lock to full lock with the car stopped and the brakes applied. Anything more than that only puts additional stress on the frame and suspension parts when you reach full lock.
The valve and assist cylinder only required around 950 psi to reach full lock with F and G series radial tires back in the 70s. I am not quite sure what pressure the Jeep gear requires with today's modern tires. All I can say is try the production pump with 950 psi pressure relief. It just might be sufficient.
