Default Air cleaner clearance problem

I have a small block in my 68 with an Edelbrock performer intake and a Carter AFB performer carb and a Mr. Gasket 14 inch wide X 2 inch high air cleaner. All of these items were on the car when I bought it. The front end was not on the car due to a minor accident. I put a new front on with a new small block hood. When I try to close the hood, it hits the air cleaner and holds the hood up in the rear about 1 1/2 inches. It doesn't make sense that it won't close now. I can't find an air cleaner low enough. Has anyone ran this combination with a small block hood or do you have to use a big block hood with the edelbrock performer intake since it sits so high ?

It's not a real easy problem to fix if you have an electric choke. A drop base will probably hit the choke mechanism so I ended up getting an offset base to clear it. I also had to trim about a half an inch or so off the base with my dremel. To get a straight cut I rigged up a large bolt on the side of the dremel that was held in place by a hose clamp to keep the cut off depth uniform. I don't recall for sure where I got the base but I'm sure Summit sells one.
Here's one from Jegs that should work with a little cutting.
