Default Spiral Turbo Baffles

I have Hooker Side pipe Headers. To reduce noise, I went with the quiet mufflers, which are too restrictive. Last time I looked, they had another set of inserts that were lass restrictive. However in these forums I ran across Spiral Turbo Baffles. Anyone have experience with these?

Although different tracks have different noise requirements, I need to know if they are quiet enough to allow me to time trial on most tracks.

Thanks

They're great products that do exactly what they claim. As far as noise, I never used a db level meter on them. They're not really much different than the Hooker glass pack inserts, noise-wise. But the hp loss is 1/3 of what the Hooker is.

I have Hooker Header side exhaust and I run STS Baffles and I love them. Get quite a few thumbs up as I drive by or idle through our main srteets. Makes the car sound like the old days of the 67's. You will not have a problem on the track and but you will in the city only if you tromp on it a lot. Nice growl around and up too 2,000 RPM after that it will really start to draw attention ( some unwanted if you know what I mean)
I have had my car for 31 years and have gone through loads of mufflers. They sound great at first until they start to deteriorate. The STS baffles are steel so once you tune them to the sound you want they stay that tone forever.
Tune you ask?
You can tune them by drilling holes in the end cap of the baffle. The baffle has a 1 1/2 dia cap on it ,covering the 1 1/2 dia center tube,so that the exhaust is forced to go through the outside baffle ( looks like an ice auger ) if you want the loudest sound you just remove the center cap and it's at it's loudest,if you want to tune it you put the caps back on and start drilling 3/8 holes in the cap until you have the sound and tune you want, simple.

I have been searching past posts. I also ran across this:

http://www.sweet-thunder.com/chamber..._corvette.html

I am wondering which one might be better.

You have to walk that fine line. Less back pressure means more noise and a lot of tracks have sound restrictions. Ahhh the good old days when we ran open tubes at Bridgehampton race circuit.

I'd steer clear of those glasspacks. Those are a louvered core design which are pretty restrictive, probably even at "2.5 inch inner diameter". You can see the louvers in this pic:

IMHO, the only glasspacks worth it are the perferated core. With these, the inner tube looks like a bunch of holes were drilled in it. Then, fiberglass was wrapped. Here is a pick looking down a perferated core glasspack:

The problem is that these are hard to find and would require custom work to make them fit. They are also a bit louder

Dyno Max Ultra Flow inserts come in 4"ODX18" lengths, you can fit 2 of these into a sidepie setup. You will have to do your own fabrication for this set-up, it has worked well for me in the past.

I couple years back I fabbed up a set using 2 1/2" x 28" long Dynomax Magnum Glasspacks, worked good but the Hookers sound better

I just did the Hooker sidepipes and STS baffles, didn't drill out the caps at all. They sound incredibly good imo. As noted above, a little loud if you get on it in town, but if your careful, they don't seem too bad.

Default Spiral Turbo Inserts with a drilled center vs Hooker Max Flow inserts

After reading this posted by ZL1powr, I am considering Hooker Max Flow inserts

"The runs on Saturday were with the Hooker header side pipes with Hooker Max Flow inserts. I thought it would be interesting to do some runs with open headers so I came back on Sunday morning and removed my side pipes for another try. Any of you on the fair grounds on Sunday morning probably heard it.

The peek HP only went up by 7 HP to 587 and the torque peek was the same at 641. The curves are identical and lay on top of each other. The 7 HP advantage at peek was in the noise level. The average HP from 3000 to 6200 was up by 2 hp and the average torque over that range was down by 2 ft-lbs, so the Hooker Max Flow inserts had essentially no impact. The A/F was showing to be lean at the top end but I don’t know if it was an accurate reading since they were having trouble keeping the O2 probe in place. As you can see in the video below the exhaust flow tried to blow the O2 probe out of the pipe on the open header runs. It also appeared to be on the rich side with a little bit of black smoke so I am not sure which way to go yet.

I was also concerned that my HP might be affected by constricted flow between the carburetor and the hood so I made a run with the hood propped slightly open. The engine responded with a loss of 15 HP across the RPM range. I suspect that the carb was now able to pull in hot air from the engine compartment and off the radiator instead cooler air through the cowl induction. I also am concerned that my Malory 110 electric pump and 3/8” fuel line at 7 psi may not be adequate for this engine. I have some detective work to do to determine if factors other than the headers contributed to the flat HP curve above the torque peek."

However after reading many posts on this topic it seems that
less flow = more HP = more noise.

Anyone know which is louder: Drilled Spiral Turbo or Max Flow inserts?

Where can you get Max Flow inserts? Summit?

Default STS alternative.

Question. I found this brand of spiral baffle from Raney’s truck parts. They sell spiral baffles for $130 a pair. They are 12” so I would have to get two pairs and double stack them. Just got my C3 the other day and it has headers and straight side pipes (not sure the brand). They are awesome but only for about 10 minutes. So here’s my questions

Will they perform and sound like the sts baffles? They are essentially the same construction and length.

Has anyone tried the Raney brand? I have attach the link to the Raney ones. They will save a couple hundred bucks.

This is a 17 year old thread. You might consider starting a new topic thread since your question and issue has nothing to do with the original topic in this thread - it's dead...
