My A/C stopped blowing cold, which is upsetting because I just spent a wad of cash to replace everything two months ago. When I checked the system I noticed the a/c low pressure cut off switch had detached from its schrader valve and dangling down below the accumulator. I figure this is why the A/C stopped blowing cold. I tried to screw it back on but it would'nt stay (probably over torqued during install or stripped). I ordered a new one. Anyone have experience installing these. Is it just a matter of screwing it back on? When I was attempting to screw the old one back on refrigerant was bleeding out. Do I just screw on the new one and keep tightening till the hissing stops? Thanks in advance
Yes, they are designed to just screw on and off so that the freon does not have to be evacuated. I can't imagine what happened to your original unless someone really hit it with something. Be sure the threads aren't stripped.

The switch is open when low presure is sensed and closed when normal presure is sensed. To check the system you can jump the switch and the system should work normaly. The only concern I would have would be if the old switch backed off slowly, you could have lost some Freon during that time. When you install the new switch check to make sure the O-ring seal is seated in the new switch before you install it.
What ever you decide, don't just jump the switch and leave it unattached to the accum. Doing so can destroy the compressor if you are significantly low on freon as oil travels with the freon and lubes the compressor.

Do not want to hijack, but if the freon slowly over the years leaks out, then does oil also go with it? The site glass reveals a very clear liquid only, and i suspect it is just oil? '72 original system. thanks
Generally, oil will leak out with the freon. If the sight glass in the drier is not clear, you are low on freon.
It's really quite clear, no 'fog' that I remember from the old days on other cars, where the fog indicated you needed a charge.... But I figured it was missing freon because it smoked the thermal heat limiter fuse after running about 5 minutes.

If the sight glass is clear and it's blowing cold, I'd say you're okay.
