Seems to me, most kits (regardless of brand) are a compromise for most folks ... if I'm building a motor & spending that kinda $ I want the parts that are optimally matched to what I have ... not necessarily the priciest nor the biggest ... but the best match.

used to be ... maybe same today:
  • performer cam was small aka "RV" cam ... responsive down low but soon runs outta breath. Great heavy/hauler truck cam ... hence RV.
  • RPM cam was too big for most street ... poor vacuum, poor response/dog down low.
Had a similar delima when pickng out parts for my rebuild my L-82. Had the cam I wanted already in the car, added 1.6:1 roller rockers to bump up the lift to 480/490 with 222 dur, right about where I wanted it. Just food for thought before dumping an engine kit for lack of the perfect cam.

If you stuck with the L48 bottom you need CR from new heads 64, 62 and 58 cc chambers on new heads will do some of that. Then you need a cam, wow these guys are hot on a big point too big is too big and too small is too small.
I think this is the best for me, http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD806...merIntake.aspx
with a cam like this http://www.sdparts.com/product/KITSD...5quotlift.aspx
On top of that, I have asked SDparts to see if I can get the head/intake combo with an Edelbrock performer airgap intake.

What do you think?
I like OK ... has 64cc chambers so scr not so much w/ L48 pistons ... really need fp 1094 shim gaskets here ... dunno what's in kit. That SD174 cam kit's a good choice for L48 ... it's virtually same as well-received summit K1103. Vortecs w/ fp 1094 gaskets will push an OE L48 to about 9.5:1 scr.

Keep in mind results from same head-cam-intake kit installed on L48 & L82 will be different because L48 has dished pistons w/ 4 reliefs & L82 has flattops w/ a small trough.
So (if given same head-cam-intake kit) L82 will make more compression, power & torque.

Additionally remember, Im pretty sure that the L82 is a forged crank, 4 bolt main, forged pistons and pink forged rods. A much stronger bottom end. Im figuring that my 64 cc heads depending on gasket thickness CR wil be between 10.2 and 10.7 depending on quenche. Im shooting for 400/400 street motor.
