Got a 73 L48 that's all factory except it has a small cam. Noticed a little lifter noise coming from, I think, the #8 cylinder. About the same time I noticed a rich smell to the exhaust, which is new. Performance is the same, oil pressure is the same. I did have a spark knock at high RPM and accelaration, say at 65 and punching it to around 80. Next time I filled up I went to a mid range octane and that cleared up the knock so I'm not sure that I didn't originally have some bad gas. Again, performance is the same.
My question is this. Would the lifter being out of adjustment also throw off the timing or the fuel mixture to create the rich smell? I'll be adjusting the lifters but was curious about the smell and if my problems run deeper than a simple adjustment.
Pulled the valve cover today and found that the rocker had a piece broken off at the bottom. It appears that the pushrod had pushed through and broke the piece off. Sent the heads to the shop and I'm changing out the springs to a little heavier and working the heads a little since I have a cam. Lucky I didn't drop a piston.
