Hey thanks for all the help, but buy the sound of it sounds like the 82 is hard to mod because it uses fuel injection. I found an 81 for about 5000, would that be easier to mod?

I think the '81 had a one-off computer-controlled ignition/carb set-up, and the distributor may-not be compatible with your modifications:
I don't know for a fact, and I don't want to steer you wrong, but I'd check with others who have modified '81s themselves.

Modding fuel injection isn't terribly difficult, it's just different from working on a carb.
you'll have a few more options as far as performace upgrades with a carb motor, but your 400hp for $1500 is still a stretch. If your not going to want to learn how to tune a ecm then your probally better off with a carb'd car.
If your looking for one, go with an '80, no computer! Tons of stuff available for upgrading. The '80 has 4 speed or automatic trans.
It still has the '82 body style.
I have an '82 and I went with a crate motor, I gave up on the CFI
Good luck,
Dave
I have an 82. Really, the best, but probably not the cheapest solution for more power is to lose the Crossfire and get a crate engine/carb. Now you can keep the CFI and do the changes others have metioned(it will cost more than 1500.00 to get 400hp) but you won't have much room to 'grow' after that. I think a gear change will give the most SOTP improvement.
I did a fair amount of research and went with a zz383, best improvement I ever made! I'm sure there are numerous other opinions, however I've been very pleased with the change to crate engine /carb!

My all-stock '82 ran 15.90s @ 83 MPH with the OEM 2.87s in the heat of summer, and after a swap to 3.73s, it ran 15.003 @ 89 MPH, but that was on an extremely cool day
(how-much the atmospheric-conditions accounted for the performance-increase is questionable )
when I next ran the car 3 years later, the wimpy 700R4 was starting to crap-out (not-staying in 3rd Gear / sliming it's way back-into 2nd at-will under W-O-T, etc. ), and the car went-back to running 15.90s in Florida.
Gears'll not-only wake-up the sluggish Cross-Fire, but work-well with most future changes (intake, carb, and cam that result in a higher RPM potential ):
spend the money once on gears now, and enjoy it after all future improvements, too!
