When installing a steering coupler which part goes on the steering box shaft the rag joint or the other half of the coupler?

The coupler is often referred to as the "rag joint". It can only go on one way, I believe your '73s splined steering box shaft should have a flat indexing spot that will mate to the female portion of the coupler.

The steering box input shaft is smaller in diameter than the steering column. It's not possible to put the flex joint (rag joint) in backward.
Maybe I misunderstood the question.

Just a quick point of reference. The C2's, 63-66 std rags had the same size spline on both ends. One end was riveted to the flange but the spline was the same. I know this doesn't pretain to your question, just throwing it out there.
