when i took my old radio out it wasnt secured down to anything, and now that i am putting a new corvette one in, i would like to have it properly secured. I noticed that there were two holes on the bottom of the guage plate, and i was wondering if they are supposed to be used, and if the radio should be bolted up anywhere else?
If your putting in a unit with the ***** like a stock unit that will take care of the front. The back side usually has a ground strap to screw to the floor or a side bracket that will stabilize the back.
On my 71 there's a strap riveted to the passenger side of the fiberglass transmission hump that has 1 bolt which screws into the side of the radio. This stabilizes the radio. The two nuts on the front (behind the *****) fasten the radio to the gauge bezel.

so how does the guage cluster bolt to the centre console, and do i have to unscrew my guage cluster if the radio is in and the two front bolts arent in?
The two studs on the bottom of the gauge cluster panel get inserted into the metal support band at the front of the front console. Then you do some voodoo to get the two flanged-headed nuts threaded onto those studs and tightened. PITA If you have small hands, you can get the nuts on through the front access panels on either side of the console.
ok are studs actually bolts or are they welded into the guage face, because mine doesnt have the studs, and does the nut thread from inder the reinforcement?
This photo shows the studs sticking out the bottom of the gage cluster (looking up from the bottom) and the console is tipped up and pulled back a little. The radio support bracket I showed in previous post is on the right toward the back.
