The smoke on start is valve seals. You will mostlikly find this only happens on cold starting and the oil has had a chance to seep into the cylinders. My '80 has the problem also.
The popping is a tuning problem and could be any number of things. You may look for oil fouled plugs.
You never mentioned the color of the smoke. If it's blue, that's oil. My '76 had it on start up and a change of the valve stem seals fixed the problem.
Everything points to valve seals, timing and tune up needed. That's what's in order. I'll suggest it to the repair shop then get their diagnose, estimate, get it done so it's ready for the better weather!!
